Each temple is in its own unique state of decay or restoration, each being partially restored by a different country or government at a different time in history. One in particular--I like this story--was taken apart stone by stone in order to be restored, but during the Khmer Rouge time, the records and plans were destroyed, and so they could not figure out how to put it back together. The thousands of pieces remain laid out like tombstones surrounding the temple, seemingly organized, but perhaps impossible to decifer.
